Thumbs up Gwinnett County GA Stormwater approval - Apr 1st, 07, 12:45 AM

On Wednesday I had my test at the Gwinnett County Stormwater dept.
With my Environmental Clean and Recovery rig I was recovering the water before it got to the drain but I still had to go and get a drain cover (magnetic / water pillow or sticky cover) and a sand sock to divert water as if I was using some collection method like a sump pump etc. I filled a 10' sand sock with water and with a couple of pvc fittings and a fawcet so I could empty the sock easily after use, and got a magnetic sign to cover the drain and was approved. My name is on the list as a company that is capable of recovering surface cleaning washwater and adhering to the regulations.
I think this is a great system that they have set up and guess what - no low ballers.
Basically nothing but rain down the drain is what they are sticking to.
Well done Gwinnett County - here is the link.

Excellent,
I think you are the closest as well to Gwinett.Plus you are ahead of the curve and will be "on the inside" while many will be scurrying to meet compliance.
I am still on the Cobb roster for approved venders and it has paid off in the past. This will be an excellent positioning tool for your company as well, since I am sure the other vendors' equipment is no comparison to yours.
That is a small list of compliant vendors right now, but, as it grows your firm will edge it's way to the prefferred vendors list. Since your gear will stand out above the rest and be the first thing to pop into the scenario, the jobs will most likely always lean your way.

.........what did I just say...... where's my coffee cup?

Congrats!!!

Bob,
Good job getting on that list. When I retire here from my "Other" I am going to look into opportunities like that here.

What I have to figure out is how Gwinnett County got to that point where they put it down in writing. From what I heard about them is that they also sent out a letter to 3000+ businesses, municipalities etc. about the rules on being compliant.

One of these days I have to talk with Cujo Cooley about this since I think he was in the very begining phase of getting this done.

Bob can you elaborate some on how Gwinnett county got to this phase??

John
Best people to ask about it and how they got there is Cujo Cooley and Sunbrite's Pete and Tracy. Gwinnett used BASMA as a model and adapted it for themselves.
John this all sounds fairly easy but the county nextdoor to Gwinnett is Fulton County and they are very strict as well but could not be less intrested/motivated to follow the Gwinnett model. Go figure. All the work is done just change a couple of names on the forms and they would be home and dry.
I will soon scan a copy of the surface cleaning/info / guidelines hand out that they are sending out to all businesses in Gwinnett for you and other interested parties.

The list only works when people actually read it. I am on the City list here and have gotten a few calls over the years, but nothing special.

At least its a start. People are becoming more and more aware of environmental issues as are many companies out there. This Gwinnet County thing is just the begining..................

Pattersons Pressure Washing got tested today as well (12-12-07)from Gwinnett County Stormwater dept.
They came to a location here in Conyers and we demonstrated our system to them.
We had a drain cover the only thing we did not have was a water sock which they said we would need before they would sign us off.
So as soon as they left I called Tracy at Sunbrite, told him to ship one to me and he suggusted to fax Qwinnett the invoice for proof of purchase and by the time they got back to office they had everything they needed to give me the go ahead.
So thanks Tracy...some of you guys who have not used Sunbrite...I recommend Pete and Tracy, they are good guys and sometimes make us look smarter than what we really are!!
So now we should be on the list by the end of the week!!

Al,

Congratulations on what I would consider to be a milestone in your company's history.

As local municipalities tighten their belt on the water situation in GA and the CWA is imposed across the nation more and more companies like yours will need to go through the certicification/approval process.

Again, congratulations on a job well done!

If there is one single piece of adivce you could give to a fellow contractor in your neck of the woods regarding approval, what would that be?

Sunbrite --

One of biggest thing that has helped me is having another local PW contractor share his knowledge and his continuing experience on reclaiming while pressure washing.
Some people might not want to share such information due to the fact that they think if they help their competition would be cutting their own throat.
My belief comes from my Christian Values...help others and it will be multiplied 10 fold.
The one who helped me is no longer competition but a good friend that knows that if either one of us needs help the other is there.
PS
Occasionally you might get burned from someone, but to me ...the Good far out ways the bad!

My question here is why are you guys even suggesting a discharge down a storm drain in the first place?

The whole premise for the thread is that we are suggesting that we have been using storm sewers when in fact most washers’ water never comes close to a storm drain leading to waters of the US.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've seen yet on the net. Keep in mind that a county has adopted the program.

I traveled to Gwinett GA, I saw people washing right into the river. actually the river itself.

In my opionion they have allowed developers to not comply, we all know why? Dollars, what a shame for the people of the state and the eviroment.

They should make these property owners come up to speed and get with the program.
