Need Advice on Lead Paint Removal - Dec 12th, 07, 02:07 PM

If anyone has experience stripping lead paint I could use some advice.

I have been contacted by the local airport authority who are demolishing a building. When they reached the foundation they discovered it was coated with a lead paint. Their policy is to recycle as much building material as possible - including the foundation concrete. The wall is approximately 3 ft high by 120 ft long. I haven't been on site yet, but i expect to have a look later this week.

I suggested 2 options:

1: Wet Sandblasting
2: Chemical Removal

I think the cost of chemical removal would be extremely high (that's a lot of chemical), plus they want the runoff contained and disposed of.

So I'm leaning towards wet sandblasting but I don't have the gear. Can anyone recommend equipment and which abrasive media would work the best? How would the waste be properly disposed?

I'm in Canada so EPA guidelines don't apply but I'm really looking for "best practice" for my safety and public and environmental safety.

I'm also clueless about what to charge for this type of service. If you can PM me with pricing info I will appreciate it.

In the states you have to be Lead Abatement certified, just to work on it, each & every worker. As for the contractor I don't know what kind of certification you need, there is high insurance , disposal cost are super high on and on and on. I did several lead abatement jobs, Had to build full containment, respirators, double tyvec suits etc etc.

Make sure of the laws and if this is a job going on now, you wont have time to prepare and learn the laws, call a professional lead abatement company. Fines can be huge and clean up even bigger

I did a lot of bridges & over passes, before they passed all the regulations, after the prices went up 10 fold

I know of one job a company went in at night time to do a little overpass, minimal containment, well one home owner knew the laws and raised hell, had EPA State, Local etc etc , They (insurance company) spent MILLIONS of $$$ cleaning it up. There was lead there before, stuff that just fell off, but since they caught this company doing it with out the proper certs & containment they got whacked. They actually pulled up lawns and put in new, they painted some houses, some house got new interior paint jobs, new carpets etc etc

So what I'm trying to say, call a pro if its required in Canada

I hear you, this was several years ago I did this kind of work. I would call what ever you have up there for the EPA and ask them or another agency.

If its as strick as here, you can make some major $$$$ doing this work, its just the liabilty must be insane

Good luck, maybe someone else can find a link. Look for lead abatement
