what is legal for cities to tell us? - Jul 6th, 04, 08:43 PM

I am set to become certified by Riverside, CA this coming Friday which I want and need to work there as well as having to be licensed too.

They do not use the reciprocate system of licensing, if your licensed in the city your business is based then your ok here system, they want the money I guess.

question is can a city say you cannot use certain chemicals?

I ask as part of my certification is bringing the MSDS sheets (they are always in my truck) with me and they will tell me what I can and cannot use.

Seems if it has any caustic in it is out, sheesh that is what does the job of breaking up the grease for me and I just restocked.

They also say if you’re not certified by them you cannot work in their city.

Is this legal, never mind that they can get away with it, is it legal on both issues?

Cmon Jon, you should know by now that most Cities want you to have a license for their town, regardless of where you are based. Of course they want the money. If I will be doing a one time job somewhere, then I do not worry about it, if I will be doing ongoing work there, then I get one to play it safe. Just got my Santa Monica one today.

As far as the chemicals go, if you are recovering, then it should not matter. However they may be concerned that you are going to discharge to the Sanitary while in town and mess up their pH. As you already know, Cities can say whatever they want in regards to their treatment plant, so if it is based on that, then I would consider it legal.

When they made the Zep Flash Light, & the Split, they considered some of that. The product description states in part "Ideal for use in states or municipalities where tinted effluent is prohibited or regulated". Maybe you better switch back. Take those MSDS sheets as well and see what they say.

Alan not always true, many only want to know you are legal and licensed but with the budgets getting tighter they are now enforcing their rights to require a license for each city.

Years ago a County license covered every city in that county, not anymore.

Now try this, how can one city justify charging triple more then all others?

Not complaining as I will be getting the license today, ran out of time yesterday but wonder how they can ROB us.

Then some cities across the USA don't require any license at all so go figure.

Don't worry about taking the MSDS sheets, that is one thing they said I had to bring!

Each City can choose what they want to charge based on population and a million other factors.
My City license is $15.00, while the Santa Monica one is $85.00, so go figure that one out. I have talked to most cities that i have done work in for one reason or another and each one said that I would need a license to work there. Now maybe way back in the old days, when it was a modern and perfect world, they allowed a person to work with a license from another City, but not in today's disfunctional society. County License??? Not around here. The only thing they issue a County license for is when it is an unincorporated part of town. They also are the ones to handle the DBA's.

Here, it is still the good old days! A license is required for the county where you're based, not where you're working. I think it is $50.00/year.

Jon:

You should know better than to ask whether a government entity can tell us what to do...of course they can!!!

Hey Mike don't you know me well enough to know I question AUTHORITY?

I passed my certifaction test for reclaim yesterday and handed over 3 MSDS sheets for chems I use, now I have to wait till they say yes or no to using them.

I pretty much know the answer is NO since the inspector was saying all chems should be GREEN and environmentally safe.

The only problem there is I have tried several of those and not one is worth the money, not one cuts the grease off concrete in dumpster pads and half did not cut the dirt off anyplace else.

We all know in order for a chemical to work it needs some castic stuff in it and there is the key word CASTIC, if that word is on the MSDS it is almost 100% a given they will say NO to using it.

This to me is going to be a challange, finding a safe chemical I can use that does not cost $30 bucks a gallon. Zep has one that is made for reclaim systems and I was using it but got tired of powder not mixing at two in the morning so went back to a liquid chem.

Anyone using a GREEN or Environmentally safe product that truly cuts grease and stuff of concrete post brand and other info here please.
