Rust?? - Apr 21st, 08, 01:22 PM

I have 3 4 Plex apartment buildings to do and they all have scattered well water rust spots. I did a test spot with F8 and it worked great. The rust ran right off within about 30 seconds. The only problem is I think it did lighten the actual color of the siding a bit "I might have had it mixed to strong". I cant really say what exact ratio I used in my test mix because I just mixed some F8 with warm water in a spray bottle. You can see the test spot I did in one of the pics on the bottom left of the garage. You can tell from the pics but up close in person it looks to have lightened the actual siding. How do I get away with treating just the spots instead of the entire buildings? As you can see there is probably only 5% of the total siding that has rust one it so I dont think it would make sense to treat the whole building. Also, can I get F8 on the glass and aluminum along the windows as long as I have prewetted it and rinse thoroughly? Any advice is once again appreciated. Thanks

Oxalic acid mixed at 1 lb. per 5 gal. should work without affecting siding. Adjust ratio as needed but that will get you started. Mix with hot water to dissolve easier. Should also note that this mix is not a down streaming ratio. This is the final mix.

Thanks for the tip. I have F-8 "oxalic". Where do you get your straight oxalic? I cant find any locally.

I buy from Univar. Search any local chemical dealers.

Can you tell me if this will also work for flatwork? Need to clean several rust spots from a location where golf carts have parked and leaked rust onto new concrete. If not, is there another option?

Thanks.

Byron - are you sure it's plain rust and not battery acid leaks? Color is very similar but we have had zero luck with battery acid using oxalic - had to go stronger with an acid from EaCoChem. Did the trick very nicely. How new is new?

Celeste,
Thanks for the reply. New - as in poured last August. The maintenance supervisor told us they've talked with the golf cart company and got the response basically saying, "yeah its battery acid 'weeping' out of the carts when charging and causing the battery tray to prematurely rust ..." I've dealt with battery issues before - with no success. I'm not sure this will end any better. What is EaCoChem? We've used SureKleen 600 on other jobs for acid-washing brick - is it similar?
Again, thanks,
Byron

Byron: | EaCo Chem Inc. Cleaning and Restoration Compound Manufacturer | For that type staining on that young concrete, GS Restoration will do the trick. Probably should test around with it to get the strength right with concrete less than a year old but it will clean the stains.

We used to use Prosoco products - just have had such better results with EaCoChem's lines, we haven't looked back!

Thank You - Apr 27th, 08, 01:31 AM

Celeste,

Thanks! I've talked with EACO Chem and should be receiving samples middle of next week to test apply. We'll see how it works out.

Again, thank you,
Byron

Hi Joe, C.L.R. is Oxalic based if I remember correctly. Much cheaper and less frustrating to use straight Oxalic. They also sell Oxalic acid in hardware stores that is called wood brightener, but they also sell sodium percarbonate that could be labeled as wood brightener, so read the label.
