Question Chain store bidding. - May 5th, 08, 07:25 PM

I am curious as to what you guys think. I have an opportunity to bid on 150 to 175 stores. Would be full time work. I have 1 month to post bid on a per store basis. This would be Walgreens free standing stores. I dont know the square footage as of yet but all are about the same size. Almost all I have seen throughout the states are the same size. The job entails all walls of course. Drive thru. Small half spainish tile roofs. (Front and drive thru)
Sidewalks all curbs parking bumpers. Oil spots in parking spots. And rooftop vent cleaning. Plus window washing once per month. I figure it would take 10 to 12 hrs per store and 5 stores a week. And posibly one every 6 months. Thats with my helper who is fast. I am probably lowballing here but am thinking around 1500.00 to 1800.00 per store based on the one here in town. Thanks for any input.

What they pay now?
Sounds like you about $120 an hour?
Wouldn't doubt if I heard they pay like an average of like 4 cent or some such.

I would be shocked and amazed if you got that price. If you are lucky, figure a third of that.

If you had a signature I would answer, not even close on time or price. 45 to 90 minutes for maint.

the units are close together and your budget is way off. I also know the guy that does these if your in FL?

Good luck, your prices are making him look good.

I'll agree with the time estimate, which seems way out of whack for two workers. Seems it should be at least 1/3 to 1/2 the time your estimating. If it were to take you even 8 hrs per store, you're not taking into account you will be trying to operate while the store has pedestrian traffic, which will slow you down even more. You'd have to get to the location before light to set up, and try to get as much done before the store opens.

We use to do Walgreens in our area, and got rid of them in less than a year. All we were doing is the sidewalks and water sweeping the main parking spaces directly in front of the stores. They would string out payments for 90 to 120 days. Not my idea of a profitable customer. IMO, you will never get what you're asking for. Good Luck!

First off I want to thank everyone so far for the responses. It sounds as though I am thinking way to high. As far as time I think it will take as long as I posted before to do the job right. I have been getting alot of business from people doing a crappy job. They just fly through the job to get it done. Which is good for me at least. As far as customers we would be doing most stores at night. Unless in a residential area. I am making the transition from Household and light commercial, to all commercial. Lastly no disrespect to you Ron but if they were happy with the people you know, then I doubt they would have called me to bid. (Long story how that came about) Also I have a signature whoo hoo. Sorry new to the forum world. Thanks again keepem coming.

If you can't do it right the first time. Don't do it at all. If you take longer than others so what. You will have a customer for life. Instead of speeding through and possibly missing something, and losing the client. Like so many others have done and still do. Also bid high and let them talk you down works every time.

They love that one, it gets tossed aside and they look at the correctly priced ones.

picture three or five guys sitting down and your one subject of 25 they have to handle.

They have no time to call you and ask you if you will do them cheaper.

I suppose you walk into walgreens often and say let me have a coke. can i get that half off?

People are busy and they want someone who knows the costs of doing business and will make a fair profit.

No disrespect takenm i hope you dont mind me being blunt.

Tony l from walgreens views this bbs as well as PWI. He is the VP of maintenance for the entire country. he also instructs his people to use these places as sources for locating rural contractors.

Do you think people dont shop others everyday, i just had and eleven year old customer shop me. When he was done he called and told me. I was more but he felt i had never let him down and he was staying with us.

The economy is bad, people are shopping all services and goods for the best price. Stock holders have to be paid.

I would assume you have hot water. I used to do a lot of cvs stores and I would charge 1100 per store for pretty much the same thing but that was way before gas was 3.75 a gl and diesel 4.35 a gl.

Ron Thats a good analogy but People can stay home and break even or make a little bit of money. I realize there is power in numbers (does Wal-mart ring a bell) I am not sure what the cost of doing business in Arizona is but I will guarentee it cost more to do the job than call people and see how much they will WHOR* themselves out for.

I like the bluntness LOL. Quick story real quick. Talked to the guy who is in charge of maintenance here told my situation. Said he would see what he could do called me back and told me all aspects and how to bid. Look we ALL had to start somewhere and unfortunatly I started with residential. So no I do not have alot of commercial experiance. But I do have experiance. If you can wash a stucco house or a few small stucco and block commercial buildings. Then I would think you can do it on a large scale. Maybe I am wrong but I think that it requires the same effort and chemicals. Just more machines. And the statement is right about the numbers BUT I do know this they will take the lowest bid . Especially if you are giving a free demo. And yes I firmly believe in bidding high. The commercial accounts that I do have they thought well heck I am getting a good deal. When in a actuality it is about what I wanted to begin with. I sometimes even get them to bite on the high prices. Example is I have three conveniance stores that I do. I bid 1500.00 and made them think they talked me down to 1200.00. But a really wanted 1200.00 to begin with. And now they wondered why the never used me before. My work is that good. Thanks again guys.

Mel you been around a long time. I have charged walgreens that too, not on 15 day maint. that only takes 45 minutes.

hey guys

Good thread... Ron, what area(s) are you cleaning at a walgreens store that is taking 45 mins. I am working at getting on vendor list with walgreens and submitting unsolicited bids... Just wondering what they typically look for - a comprehensive service like "rangars" bid or basic sidewalk, entryway, drivethru.

Mel, how's business down your way? Passed through vero beach recently... Nice area!

Rangar, good luck with the bid.
