What kind of nests are these? - Jun 6th, 08, 09:26 PM

Came across these today. They have nearly 100 around the building. What kind of bird makes and lives in these?

Some type of mud swallow.

If you are cleaning those you need to be certain that there are no babies. It is against the law to kill them or destroy their nest according to the migratory bird act.Swallow Control: Trapping, Removal, and Prevention Services

They are Cliff Swallow nests. Cliff swallows have an orange rump, square tail & buffy forehead. In case you have to remove the nests, the young usually leave after 21-24 days. However some pairs will nest more than once.

My immediate thought was barn swallows.

Man, I wouldn't kill baby birds even if it wouldn't be against a the law. Iv'e had people ask me to knock the nests down even with the baby birds in there. No way man, only a scoundrel would do such a thing.

I have not been asked to remove them, and I would not as I am not a bird killer, I was just curious to know what they were. If they move out, then I have no problem with it. I have never seen that many nest in one place before.

Never seen that many, Alan?????

Whew!

Now they found a home, wait 'til you see next year!

They should have been stopped when they first started.

I'm NOT saying they are as bad as pigeons, but they can REALLY make a mess.

But I guess that might be good for the flatwork guy!

...and DON'T do anything about them NOW! Too much flack from passers by.

Good luck!

For what it's worth, they are insect predators, so they remove large amounts of mosquitos every night.

Might make the flatwork seem worthwhile...

This is a picture I took on 1/18/08 about 70 miles north of Little Rock on the Little Red River. The photo was more about the river rising as my son & I were trout fishing.
You can see the nests on the bridge. The birds also build their nests up under the bridge. I would imagine there are hundreds of these nests on the bridge. Not sure if there is 100% occupancy though.

Stay safe & hydrated,
Chuck
