My customer has a very large home with alot of rock some is thin cut but alot of it is bigger pieces with actual mortar in between. This is 9,000 sf. Perhaps 5-10% of the rock has ugly efflourescence that I am treating with Eaco MSD-80. I started working on the efflourescence today am was not sure if he wanted to seal the whole house or just the bad spots. He is very busy with more than one home and cannot get back to me all the time. I started cleaning and power rinsing of the cleaner and it just felt better to do the whole thing rather than patch work problem areas. I understand the sealer is a good idea to protect mortar joints from freeze thaw cycles. My questions are:
1. Is there any good data on the net to support the idea of sealing rocks walls. I am using Prosoco Salt Gard and will be putting on about 35 gallons probably?
2. Does it make any sense to put a little NMD-80 on areas w/o effloursecense just to get a better wash before sealing? I have been doing that because it does have some detergent in it and there could be efflouorescence in developing stages that the NMD-80 is said to help combat.
3. On rock that is just layered thin pieces without mortar is there any reason at all to seal?
I know my lack of terminology must drive you pros nuts. I am a window cleaner by trade and did a nice job protecting this gentlemans Kolbe Aluminum windows and doors with a product called Everbrite so I am on good terms.
Wont a coat of sealant enhance the beauty of a home although it is clear?
This is a multi million dollar home and I think $2,000 or so to protect the rock is a good investment myself.
