Yea try Open Office, it does pdf export....Does most things as well as anything Office can too. Doesn't hog over or use up near the resources though....It will save things n it's own format like a template will be .odt or you can save things in a variety of past office or word formats. .....surely you ask cause your about to send me some goodies right Ken??

Ken -
Try pdf 995: create PDF documents easily for free I use it often...it's free, but you have to deal with a silly pop-up each time you use it. I use it a lot and I've gotten used to it...works great. - John |

Thinks I've used Primo before.. it doesn't really allow you to open various doc formats and change them to pdf, does it?
Far as performance and bugs of Open Office go..When the last time you used it I would have to ask?.. I use it due to MS Office being a resource hog that causes nothing but problems once it starts to go south. The bugs of MS are like cockroaches and hard to get rid of even with borax is my opinion. Don't get me wrong I use MS products much as the next person..it's just that some stuff is just too engrained into the systems these days... I do use MS Works a bit though..probably more than the Open Office actually. What you use for word processing and other office type duties Ogden? At home I am using MS Office 2007 Pro and really like it, performance is great and the new toolbar layout is very handy for when I'm using Excel and PowerPoint.
At work we looked at possibly moving to OpenOffice but found that it is very sluggish and too many patches / updates were released. With MS Office we can push out patches with ease on all our Windows / Office machines via WSUS (Windows Server Update Services). AFAIK, PrimoPDF will convert any Office doc to PDF from what I've used, but I have not played with it too much. |

This is what I use. The unlock key wasn't expensive...no more pop up ads. With this you go to your print menu and save as .pdf...real easy. Pressure Washers & Chemicals 502-231-6506, 888-243-6506

Oh now I remember..lol..it does it just a like print driver. I have on my desktop but haven't messed with it lately for some reason. Started dabbling with MS Office Document Image Writer among other things that always side tract me. I'm not sure what I did when I saved, but I didn't pay for a key and I don't have pop-ups either ! I know when I downloaded at Russ's suggestion - this was the cat's pajamas!!

Check www.SourceForge.net if you want an Open Source project that will export PDF.
If you want "freeware" then just type in "free PDF" on Google. PDF 995 is decent, I've used it many times. I've used others too. Nothing works as advertised though--for that you must pay Adobe the big $ to get the software. |

Maestro of TGS tech. You are wrong. Dead wrong. Granted, OpenOffice may be "horrible and riddled with bugs" under MS XP or Vista. Was ported to MS and may have flaws under that OS. Your post is a year old but way off the mark. Under Linux, been using OO and its predescessor , StarOffice, for maybe 9 years. Business use, not web stuff. MS XP is for Quickbooks, for a small business, Linux and OO just works. Has for a very long time. Edited: My wife, a newly retired former educator, now uses OpenOffice under MS Vista. Not that she is writing a book, but I have had no complaints. I am her tech support! Open source software is here to stay. Redmond should be concerned. Even though my post was a year old it's still valid, I've been testing OO on various computers some which are a few years old some running Core 2 Duo procs and all of them seem to have the issue of slow response whether or not it's on Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Office 2007 on the other hand runs much smoothly for me. OpenSource is great but it's not going to be replacing software that you have to buy, at least not in large corporations due to TCO and support factors. Linux is a great OS but it's not free to large corporations as some may thing, I don't have anything against opensource in whole as it has it's place and does not compete with main stream software right now.

What sort of slow down response you mean? Like global to the system or just internally to the word processing tasks themselves?.. Although I only use the OO program very minimally I been using it on xp and win2k pro on dual core for some time and only notice system speed improvements....Generally for me the big hog programs like Norton or Office caused much slow down and headaches once they started to go south in older/slower systems. I used to scream along just fine with under 400mhz machines running OO before going to newer updated machines. I think I even stll have it on some 200mhz dinos in the kids room.

Many large corps use linux for thier servers, much more stable. In my day job we use several pieces of equipment that use linux as their operating system. I give linux a try about once a year, I dont have the time it takes to figure stuff out on linux. It does get closer every year though. Ive been using OO for several years now, much quicker than MS.
