Internet Explorer question - Apr 19th, 08, 04:49 PM

Is there a way to override a page from refreshing? There seem to be some sites that have some code that cause my browser to keep doing this. Or do I have some type of malware? I run firewall, Panda Antivirus and adaware and they come back clear.

Ken,

This is a server side META parameter. I'm sure there is a Firefox extension to prevent refreshing, have no idea with IE. Don't use MS operating systems much.

Switch to Mozilla Firefox.
It's a better browser.

Is to do with java scripting or meta. You could maybe use some adjustment in your internet zones 'tools/internet options/security'...
First off though I would clear cache and all temp folders, then run spybot and/or adaware and online scanners such as trend micro housecalls or bitdefender as you could have a vbs scripting virus that yer current protection misses (yes they all miss something or other).
Now try those sites again. If they still do it you could view their code to see if there is an obvious refresh meta involved or perhaps see a script at work.
You can disable the meta refresh or prompt for scripting, etc. etc. in your internet zone or you can add a specific site to your custom restricted zone. Can't say I am all that in tune with best settings though right now. Check back with me and I'll try to dig you up a listing of where to have them and why...is somewhere in my favorites.. Once I go through these things on my own systems I rarely have any such out of the blue things happen and am prompted at a level I can deal with.
btw, firefox has plenty of folk with refresh problems too.

ps- not the one I used but it looks good info to help secure settings of either IE browser or Firefox: Securing Your Web Browser
I have done well over the years by going through the MVPS site to find some of the best infos and tips out there : Adding Sites to the Internet Explorer Restricted Zone
They don't screw around and tend to point to the best of the best!
Don't miss the tips drop down menu to learn about things like host filing and ridding systems of bug issues.

You will have to disable most of the BHO's (browser helper objects) to get it to stop. Some of them are constantly streaming to refresh the data as things come in, plus some of them track your surfing.

We switched to Firefox and never looked back.

The address the original question, no, there's no way to override the meta-refresh script unless you have a 3rd party plugin to stop it.

edit: Actually, you may be able to if you disable JavaScript (not Java).
