Today, however, my Garmin really proved to be a valuable asset. The on/off switch went bad on my deckster while I was staining a deck. I was working in an area I was unfamiliar with and I had no idea where the nearest parts store was located. I went to my Garmin and punched in points of interest, scrolled through the menu and found it actually had a listing for automotive parts stores. I touched the screen for auto parts and it instantly gave me directions to an Auto Zone only two miles from where I was working.
That is a good thing!!!!

Got a Magellan for Xmas. It was great until the Screen cracked . What a nightmare with customer service and trying to get it replaced. Then reading the Horror stories of other people dealing with the same issue.

We have tom tom units in our trucks.
There is few things about GPS:
They are not always accurate - many new streets are missing and you need to update map software from time to time to have all new streets included ( it may cost you $50-$150 yearly depending on the manufacture ) With prices going down it just may be easier and better to just buy new unit every 2-3 years.
It may say to turn where you can't or to take one way street in a wrong direction and many many other annoying problems. USE YOUR HEAD first and then follow gps directions ...or not
Part of the problem are the digital maps they are getting from each city , county , state ... if there are errors on them - it will be same thing with GPS unit.
Don't count on the traffic function. Most of the time it's very inaccurate , especially in small cities .

I use it for almost every estimate trip I go and most of the time I love it .
Remember to choose newest version , don't buy use one. Garmin and Tom tom are the most popular. You can't go wrong with them. Magellan is also a good choice.

Check Consumer Reports magazine for latest ratings.

We just bought a GPS. Tried the TomTom 930, but returned it for several reasons: The bluetooth function kept dropping the connection to the phone, when you'd power it off it would usually come right back on by itself, and sometimes when you did power it off, you'd have to use the little paperclip reset button on the bottom to get it to come back on. For routing and directions and ease of menus, it was great.

Replaced it with the Garmin 760 and we love it. Bluetooth works great, as does the FM transmitter. Great driving along talking on the phone with the other end of the conversation coming out of the truck speakers. This works great in our area, but I was in Tampa yesterday and the FM dial is just too congested for it to work well without static.

The other nice thing is that Best Buy swapped them out and gave us the Garmin for the same price, despite the $100.00 price difference.

I have a streets and trips software that I bought from costco loaded on to a laptop. It has a gps sensor that plugs into usb port. Many function and can be upgraded through internet. It is great having that big screen. It cost 100.00 bucks.

I debated going that route, but you can't beat the touch screen and all that while you're driving...I can't imagine trying to work through menus or find something on a laptop while I'm driving. The GPS is mounted just to the right of my line of sight, so I can glace back and forth.
