You can insert sound files by selecting
"Insert" --> "Object"
In the Insert Object, Object Type box, select "Wave Sound" for .WAV files, or "Windows Media Player" to insert a file that media player can play.
There is no way to make the program recognize the beat of the music, so you will have to time this yourself and tell the slides when to transition. By right clicking on the slide, you can choose "transition" and specifiy it to advance automatically after a fixed amount of time. You can do this for each slide. You can also so a similar timer to introduce new graphics, text, or other objects into the slide at a fixed time, then have the slide transition at some point afterwards. You will be a little like an editor or director putting together a storyboard when you plan your timing sequences...it can be a little hairy but with some thought you can figure it out. I think the past few versions of PPT have these features, although I'm not 100% sure about the media player feature. If you have .mp3 files and want to convert them to WAV, you can download Winamp (free), set the output to .WAV instead of your speakers, and it will write a file in WAV format. You can then use the Sound Recorder in Windows to chop segments out of the file and save them individually. It's a time consuming job, but if it's going to be a surprise I'm sure you will have a positive outlook while attempting it.
