Peachtree Accounting here. Gets complicated if you have no business or accounting background but the payroll features are excellent.

Peachtree, and I agree with Michael. There are a lot of good tracking features plus a lot of stuff you will probably never use. Payroll is a nice feature.

Looks like Quick Books is the preferred software amongst my peers.
I was an Inventory Accountant prior to starting my PW business and have a strong background in setting up Excel spreadsheets for financial reporting; thus far Excel has worked well for me. I do have a CPA doing the month end stuff for me and all I need to do is email him the spreadsheet monthly, he does the rest. Check with your CPA and see if you can send him your QB file. I do that with my tax lady. Each month I send a copy of it to her and she opens it up on her computer. She can see everything about the business as long as you enter it (bills, receivables, mileage, etc.).
QB is pretty common and chances are that your CPA can use your files to do your accounting. I pay my 9 year old daughter $100 per week to enter all receipts. It's a real time saver for me. The AmEx statement is itemized and at $6,000 - $8,000 per month, there are alot of charges! She seems to think it's worth $100... To me, it isn't. My son gets off easy, he just has to do a few little jobs to get his $100 every week. But without entering these receipts into QB, your accountant will not know your expenses. 251-252-1153 |

There is no need for me to use QB as I managed 25-30 Million on a monthly basis at my previous employer and did it all through Excel.
I simply do a Debit/Credit column in Excel and provide invoices and receipts to back them up. When I first meet with my accountant I asked about an accounting software package and he stated that with my background in accounting I did not need anything more then Excel. If however I decide to hire employees I will need something a little more complex to calculate payroll but then the programmer side of me will come out and I will write it as needed.
