Durable cell phone - Aug 21st, 06, 05:26 PM

Hey guys. Been awhile since I've been on. Been busy with other stuff and have only been doing pressure washing for family/friends and a select few past customers. I remember, however, how tough I used to be on my stuff when I cleaned and thought I'd share my recent cell phone experience, since electronics and water don't normally make good bed fellow. I was visiting my grandparents in Charleston, SC this weekend and hopped over to the beach. I dropped my clothes on the beach (along with my cell phone, GPS, and digicam) at what I thought was above the tide line. 2 hours later I went back up to find the waves tossing my shorts around, my sandals floating around, and all of my stuff covered in sand and drenched in water. The GPS is water proof, digital cam was in a protective case, but the cell phone was completely soaked throughout. I took it back to the house, opened it up, and drenched it in rubbing alcohol and used a tooth brush to dislodge the sand. After a few runs though this and a bottle of alcohol and letting it dry out overnight, I popped the battery back in and am back up 100%. This particular phone is an LG VX6100 (has probably been replaced by now) and many others may perform just as well, but I was VERY impressed by it's durability. My old Nokia took a dive in a "big gulp" coke from a gas station and was ruined a few years back, so maybe these things have come along since then. Just thought I'd share.

First, I pictured the scene in "Rob Roy" where Liam Neeson comes out of the water naked, then I looked and RyanH's pic.....his dark hair, warm smile, and I imagine onlookers were treated more to something a la Magnum P.I., aka Tom Selleck. ....Or he may have surprised us all and just done it up "Hoff-style", slinking around the beach wearing Speedos. No shame in any of these scenarios. Good to hear from you Ryan, you've been MIA for awhile, I just figured you had a shootout with the govt or something,

And oh yeah, if you want to talk about cell phones, don't allude to the fact that you were naked, LOL

It's not a big deal guys, really. Men have been telling other men from Georgia, "You sho' do have a pretty mouth" for decades. It's practically a customary greeting in those parts. Thank you, Deliverance.

Ha! I haven't been nude on a beach since Jamaica a few years back. That was 50 pounds ago and man I miss it every day!

No shootouts with any governments, although I *have* been getting behind and promoting the Fairtax more and more. I've just been traveling alot with my job and don't get much time to participate here. Amanda and I have our first kid on the way too so I've been busy piddling with woodworking trying to restore some old family heirlooms and build new nursery furniture. I'm wanting to get into doing wood restoration and custom decks/gazebos for my area. This board has really changed (in a good way) in the past year since I've frequented it regularly. Looking good Beth!

Ryan,

Did you get out of pressure washing all together? Job, what job? Now I'm really curious.

Good to hear you are well, and potent! Congrats, hope you have a beautiful child! Hey, get bored at work one day start a thread about your "fairtax" agenda---I always enjoy your politics. I could always count on reading one of your posts regarding politics and seeing something that made me think, whether I agreed or not. Good stuff!! Don't be a stranger!

....And the Ipe deck???

No, I still have all of the equipment and occassionally turn heads with the 30" steel eagle (I still haven't seen any local PWers with surface cleaners, all of them play Harry Potter and wand the surfaces). I got into an engineering firm and have been travelling alot and working on some new design projects. Our senior engineer is moving up and out and they're trying to cram all of his knowledge and experience into my noggin before the end of this year. I'm in FL right now doing some stuff (Palatka, south of Jacksonville) and waiting to see what this thunderstorm in the gulf is going to do. BTW...Floridians should be out on the rampage for ol' Jeb caving in and declaring a state of emergency for something like this. Declaring a SOE before the darned thing even hits!?!?! Reminds me of when they closed down entire school and government districts in GA a few years back on account of a snow prediction. The day all hell was supposed to break loose, we had clear skies and mid 40's. Anyway, end of rant. So the short story is I really just don't have time to commit to cleaning based on advertising. I've given a few references here and there though for some of you guys in Fayetteville and surrounding areas when people call on me. My new passion is woodworking and restoration. I plan to do my first outdoor project before halloween....a front porch, hopefully out of ipe. Oh, and about Amanda. We're due to have *something* arrive on or around Feb 6th. Won't know the gender until mid-September. Whatever it is, it is going to learn how to operate tools and mechanical equipment and will be aware enough to challenge teachers when they talk about people needing to display traits like kindness, gentleness, helpfulness and such, but never mentioning things like responsibility, accountability, or ethic.
I've been having some fun with the kids in the neighborhood in preparation and trying to learn how kids think and how to get to react. When they were out playing with their water guns, I pulled out my 5.5 gpm water gun and showed then what super soaking really is, thus earning the unwavering respect of 12 local chillun. Now i have my own crew of cheap labor helping to wash my car or take care of the lawn just so they can play with the cool "toys" that us adults just consider tools.

I've done it many, many times and I can attest that most modern electronics can withstand a good bath. If this happens to you, here's what to do:

1. REMOVE THE BATTERY.
2. Disassemble the unit as promptly as possible.
3. Rinse with fresh (preferable distilled water). With no power, mineral deposits are your #1 enemy. Alcohol was a good choice, but some of the glues/components/etc may be soluble in alcohol, and some of the minerals may not.
4. Remove as much water as possible by blotting with a paper towel or clean rag.. If possible gently blow dry with no heat. Do not use compressed air as you may force water into places it should not be.
5. Place in a low humidity area to dry. Near an AC return vent or de-humidifier work great. Don't put it in the direct sun as it may cause damage.
6. Wait 24 hours if possible, reassemble and test.

Note: sealed batteries are not all that sealed and may still contain water in the case. This is especially true of cell phones. If you unit does not function, try another battery.

Note#2: Cell phones have hidden water indictors. Don't try to take it to your phone company and claim it just quit working. They will know within seconds that your are lying.

Any questions? Call me on my franken-phone that has not only been wet a dozen or more times, but is built of parts from the carcases of the other phones I have destroyed.
