Angry Mcafee my PC? - Nov 9th, 06, 08:15 PM

Just changed hi-speed service to comcast a few days ago and loaded up the Mcafee VirusScan and firewall they offer. My PC now shuts itself down and restarts for no reason, the VirusScan randomly disables and the random updates kill performance.

Anyone have any advice on this?

Un-install it and get Norton Anti-virus protection.
You won't regret it. Puts McAfee to shame.

You can go to www.pcpitstop.com run the full test it's free and there may be something else causing problems.

Rod is right on Norton is a much better virus scan.

Hey, I like McAfee! Here's what's going on...you're machine is doing two things, downloading updates and scanning for viruses. The downloads don't slow the machine down much, but the scans can slow it down if you have a slower machine or you're running several other programs at the same time.

Look in the lower left tool bar, if you see something that looks like a gun sight...it's scanning your machine. If you see an arrow going around, it's downloading. If the scan is going on, just click on the gunsight icon and tell it to stop scanning...or, go get a cup of coffee and come back and it should be finished.

Good points Kevin and you are right about the scans dragging a slower pc down! That's why you should try to program the scan to come on early A.M if the pc is not being used. I'm wondering why the machine keeps rebooting cause virus scans don't promt you to reboot right?

John, what are the specs on ur machine?

Get rid of the Mcafee. It is no good compared to Norton. The Corporation I work for had it on Thousands of pc's and got rid of it after about 2 or 3 months because of all the viruses and problems it let through. I had it on my computer and it did the same thing. I had to buy a new hard drive because the virus it let through disabled my diskette and cd-rom drives and would not access parts of my hard drive. I was very mad and when I called their phone I was on hold forever many times. I will never use or try them again. Since going to Norton, I have had no problems at all.

I sold software for years....14 of them. Norton is the only one I'll use. Always seems to outperform McAfee. I also had McAfee one time on a personal PC, it let a nasty virus thru.....that was enough for me. Norton has never let me down.

You might also surf over to www.techiehq.net it's a great technical forum.

~Crap...let my Norton 2004 lapse. Last weekend I caught something and now my browser is hijaaked. Ain't it funny how it's these rogue antivirus companies that hijaak your browser and direct you to THEIR site when you try to launch the browser? Like THAT would make me use their product. Time for a fresh format.

As an ex sys-admin I have loads of stories on AV stuff. I use the free grisoft. I have never had a virus on my laptop. One time I did switch, to try something new, and I gave it a week. Hated it. Went back to my GRISOFT and after it loaded it found viruses that the other program let in.

Hey Shane,

I already have the programs and was told by a third party that they are good but am not sure how competent this person is as it relates to computer knowledge.

Happy Holidays bud!!
