Aggravating Laptop Display Problems! - Nov 29th, 06, 12:40 PM

I recently bought a used Toshiba Tecra 8200 notebook with a damaged display. I replaced the display, but now the text on the screen is all but illegible. I have gone through all sorts of adjustments to resolution, re-loaded the display drivers, checked the connectors, enabled Cleartype...you name it and I have tried it. BTW, the text looks fine when I start it in safe mode. Also, everything looks great when attached to an external monitor.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was just going to use it as a knock-around in my truck (GPS, DVD), but now I feel like throwing it out the window!

Ask this there....you will find help. Great forum!

p.s. let us know what it was! if an external monitor works, I would say it is the display or some odd setting.....

Did you reload the video adapter drivers?

check your refresh rate (frequency). Right click on desktop, go to properties, click on the settings tab, click advanced button. Somewhere in that area you should find a pull down box to select the refresh rate (typically between 60 and 76 Hz, in 1 or 2 Hz increments).

I have the current version of the video adapter driver. The refresh rate is 60 Hz.

I gave up and took it to the Geek Squad today, just to get the cotton pickin' thing out of my sight! We'll see how good they are. I'm curious as to their level of training. I'll let you know how it turns out. They said I should have it back in 24-48 hours. If it doesn't work, I'll allow remote access to someone who has an idea of what to look for.

Larry - I have a good tech who I can suggest for remote access.

Geek squad level of training, LOL know how to turn on a computer, know how to make changes regardless of how long it takes, know how to smile and tell customer everything is ok now, here see how good it works!

They don't need college, just a high school diploma and basic computer knowledge, nothing more.

Oh sorry they need to know how to charge you more then the job is worth.

We'll see! I still haven't heard from them, but I only authorized $69 in charges, so they can't sting me too badly.
