Transferring Data - Dec 16th, 06, 07:45 AM

How hard is it going to be to transfer data from one laptop to another?

I am going to buy a new laptop today, but I have SO many files on this one that I dont want to lose. Cant I somehow use this one as a external hard drive or something until I get all the files over?

I also dont understand how I am going to be able to get my internet over to the new computer as well. Maybe I should just take this old laptop in and have them do it.

I used a program called IntelliMover on my desktop. You hook the comps together with a USB cable, pick the files you want to transfer, and away they go..

I find it easiest to use a memory stick. You can buy them really cheap at Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc. You plug it into a USB port, drag and drop your files, plug it into your new comp, and drag and drop them from the stick. Very easy, very inexpensive, and works quickly. Good luck.

That's not hard at all, you just need to buy a wireless router. I found mine on sale at Radio Shack. Next time we talk I'll tell you how to do it.

That's what I did.....easy & inexpensive, yes......and time consuming - nearly made me crazy!

My next step was to buy a portable hard drive with a card reader and extra ports. I can store all of my huge stuff on there and since it's moveable, I can plug it into any computer we're using at the time.

Barry, I already have wireless. I dont think it will be hard, but when it comes to working on these things I dont have a clue.

Its like my pw, if it breaks down all I can do is scratch me arse because me and mechanics dont get along.

You have a DVD burner?

Just back up and burn all your folders you want files, bookmarks, address book etc.You are safer if you get an external USB drive and always make 2 copies of all important info.

Ok cool an when you do buy it get the Double-Layer DVD burner it allows you to burn over 8Gb of info on DVD where normal it's only 4Gb.SO if you do go that route just don't buy reg DVD-R/RW "well you can they will work" but get the double layer media more$$ but worth it and RW would be better if you gonna back up info every so often and DVD-R if you don't want the info to get erased or copied over.
