Tony

For the last couple of years, ESI has been working with a partner company in the development of a system designed specifically for the wood restoration industry. It's based on ARG technology coupled with CMS and data base functions. Might be a little over the top for most single crew companies, but it sure is slick.

What business functions would you want the "software" to automate for you?

Or did you mean schedualing, invoicing, payroll, employee stats, customer info, pass customer information?

Software to help keep these type things together instead of digging thru hard copy files all the time to see what products we used in the past for a customer for example.

Thanks

I was more interested in the basic functions that you listed. One thing you mention that we don't address is payroll functions. It tracks time on the job but that data is linked to the job number and not the tech id. We didn't go into accounting functions with this system. Most companies have accounting software already in place or will use a system like QuickBooks.

Our system is a tool for estimating, bid presentation, material calculation and job data tracking. It's designed to automate many of the repetitive tasks involved in complex bid presentations and allow you to track material costs, closing rates and things like that. I suppose it would be easy enough to incorporate a "time clock" function that you could then export to your payroll software.

Im in the same boat. Im looking for software to do payroll and electronically send workers comp payments and quarterly tax payments. I use microsoft money. I tried Quicken but found it to be a little too involved (probably because I have gotten use to money). Any how, Microsoft uses paycycle and I will probably give them a shot. It is about $25 a month though.

I've been working on something geared more towards project construction (decks, gazebos, arbors, fences, etc.) that sums up the materials used and generates a minimal-waste cut-sheet. It will group items together that come from the same cut lot (for example...analyze patterns for plywood cuts to fit to the same board or various cuts of 2x6 and arrange them to cut sections from the same board). This way one can sit down in a warehouse and pre-cut materials for on-site assembly. The number of cuts and some approximations for load sequencing would be calculated to give a good balance between material waste and time consumption. I think larger "crackerbox" house builders do something similar to this (DR Horton homes?) and have a small garbage bin of waste left over.

We do already use quikbooks and things are fine that way.
I was wanting some software for my computer to help with customer data, scheduling, customer history, inventory control, job list etc

I'm becoming more of a office boy in our business in the last few years and looking for some different type of tools to run our businesses.

Thank for the help

Ryan

I have a degree in CADD. That is the primary function of drafting programs like those made by AutoDesk. You can draw plans in AutoCad and then use a function to give you your build/cut list.

Some of the better software will offer "design suggestions" that help you minimize waste/time. For instance multiples of 4' X 8' are a favorite of the software because so many materials come in 4 x 8 sheets.

Is this the type of thing you are working on?

Yes, exactly. I'm using Autodesk Inventor for my designs and using parameter-driven parts for all of the pieces. Basically all parts are called out as "2x4" or "3/4" plywood" with references for material type, grade, etc. My routine looks at the parameter for base length and adds them together, then runs an algorithm to do a best match. There is a balance between load / cut time, and material waste. My ultimate plan is to arrange the stock supply and tools in my basement in such a way that I can minimize the time to actually grab a board, take it to the equipment, and cut it, then it'll just be an issue of minimizing the waste. I know large manufacturing companies use strategies similar to this and most I have been in (Jeld Wen and Cardinal Glass, for example) write their own programs internally...I haven't seen anything commercially available.

"The Millionaire Next Door" talks about "winning in the margins"...that's what I plan to do with this type of stuff...make money on the side with stuff I already have (tools, basement, workshop, knowledge). Of course, this now takes it on tangent from the OP...

Sorry - I didn't have a signature on that so let's try this again.

I would suggest looking at our software program ServiceCEO, it has all the feature set that you are describing and integrates with QuickBooks too.

visit our site for a free demo and see if it meets your needs.
