I like everything about them Scott, except for their email hosting that comes with it. Everything else is perfect in my opinion. The price I mentioned apparently is an offer for the first 6 months. Their regular hosting price is something like $5 a month for that plan though. The email I mentioned is a little slow though, if they fixed that, I would give them an A+. I also like godaddy too, Bob Parsons (owner of Godaddy) is a pretty sharp guy. I wrote to him once, when Godaddy was only a year or 2 old, commending him on the service and they stuck my email on their testimonials page. I was happy to see that.

Was checking out 1&1. Which hosting plan would you suggest? Does the business plan revert back to $9.99 after 6 mo? Besides domain name registration, what other costs are involved in creating a site and having it hosted.
I really need a site like now.
Kurt,

It's not a silly question at all. I wouldn't know it either, had I not chose to do this for a full time living 8 years ago.

I would probably go with the 1and1 Home Plan. They give you 100 GIGabytes with that plan. Most people don't even have hard drives in their computers that big, let alone web hosting. I would say this is probably the best bang for the buck. They give you 2 domain registrations with it. That means you can register 2 website names without having to pay extra money. The only catch I see to this, is that if you ever leave them, I'm not sure what the conditions are, for taking the domain with you. If you aren't sure, just email them and ask. I had my .com names before I went with them, so I can't answer that question for you. If you feel better owning your own domain, free and clear, just register the name at godaddy.com and pay $6 to 8 once a year to keep the name. As for website builder tools, 1and1's aren't the best I've ever seen, but if you are going to design it using something like Frontpage, it won't really matter. Hope that helps, if you need more help, either post it here or email me and I'll be glad to help out in anyway I can.

They have just upgraded their email system. However, I forward everything to one address in Outlook anyhow.

I just like the fact that I paid once, and I'm done for a year with everything I need at the moment. I may look at 1and1 when I need more space. Thanks for the info on them.

I think I pay quarterly on it, but I think all of the hosting service will allow annual payments, in fact, I believe that's what they prefer. Good luck!

I am using 1and1 for my hosting as well. Even though I am a former IT/Web/Network/etc I used the templates to get my site PW site up quickly. There are some limitations to using the templates but my site turned out pretty good (you may have a different opinion <g>). Along with the services provided by 1and1 the really nice thing is that it is just billed monthly. No annual commitment to get the price. I have another long time site hosted on what was a pretty good service that I pay annually and want to dump to move all to 1and1.

One piece of advice for anyone who wants to do this themselves...learn the basics of the tags and code, don't just use the program. Programs are not flawless and often create unnecessary tags.
Ok....my inner geek has spoken.

I'm currently building a business web site locally and have shopped around looking for a host. The marketing tactics, come ons, quick deal scams of some of these low price hosts look real scary. As a group, a lot of these mass hosting companies appear to be in the same league as the proverbial corner used car lot.

That is as close to universal truth as it gets. We all know it but yet, never seem to follow it. I'm convinced that there is an undiscovered "bargain" node buried deep in the human brain that prevents otherwise rational behavior.

Another penguin head? Glad to meet you. Been MS free since Red Hat 6.0 Vi is pretty hard core, never seemed to get comfortable with it. Same with emacs. Use the KDE desktop with Kate as an editor.
