I use Brinkster. If you decide to use them mention my company because they do have a referral program. I'm not a computer whiz but I was able to set my site up by myself. I am looking at paying someone to re-do it and maintain it because it can be time consuming. Brinksters support isn't the greatest either. It costs about $270 a year and your site is hosted on their server.

Is the $270.00 just the hosting for the year?

The cost is for the hosting and use of their templates, web builder, etc to get your site up and running. They do offer some support in that price but I haven't been too happy with the responses the few times I used it. They also keep statistics on site visits. You can pay extra and they will build the site for you.

Don,
I've been using the Bluefish web development editor on a Linux box, but came across a good WYSIWYG web development editor named Nvu. It is open source software, thereby free. Versions are available for Linux, Mac, and Windows. More info and downloads at: Nvu - The Complete Web Authoring System for Linux, Macintosh and Windows Also, many web hosting services offer on server web design and development tools. Usually there is no additional charge to use this software if you select to use their company to host. For a good price on hosting there are a number of resellers of godady services. I am set up as one from a previous life at TargetMarket.biz Web site design, Low cost domain names, domain transfers, web hosting, email accounts, and so much more. and the prices for hosting is good with no contract. For web design you would find Microsoft front page easier to use if not familiar with code. Dreamweaver is much better but the learning curve is hard and long. If you have not used Dreamweaver it could take days to get what you want initially. Some of the other recomendations to go with a template based site gets you going fast but less flexibility to tweek what you want.

I'd have to say Godaddy or 1and1.com (who I'm currently using). Scott mentioned that his deal can't be beat. I'd have to say, in today's business world 100mb doesn't go very far. On the other hand, $2.50 a month for 100 GIGS space/1,000 gigs transfer (1and1) is a lot better. I can't believe that there's hosting companies out there still advertising in the megabyte range.
Beth, it's funny you should mention ASO, I had never heard of them until I answered an ad on Craigslist about a year ago. I came close to working for them, but just lacked more of the linux/php skills. The owner is very friendly. They are based here in Atlanta as you may already know. |

Probably a silly question to alot of you but I'm about an idiot when it comes to this computer stuff.
Was checking out 1&1. Which hosting plan would you suggest? Does the business plan revert back to $9.99 after 6 mo? Besides domain name registration, what other costs are involved in creating a site and having it hosted. I really need a site like now. Flagler Beach, Fl. 386-338-2119 |
