Disable right click - Jan 15th, 07, 11:18 PM

Since there has been some discussion about people using images from other's websites Here is a code that you put at the end of your code above the </body> tag. It diables right clicks on images. You have to put it on every page you want to protect.

<script language="JavaScript1.2">
/*
Disable right click script II (on images)- By Dynamicdrive.com
For full source, Terms of service, and 100s DTHML scripts
Visit Dynamic Drive DHTML(dynamic html) & JavaScript code library
*/
var clickmessage="Right click disabled on images!"
function disableclick(e) {
if (document.all) {
if (event.button==2||event.button==3) {
if (event.srcElement.tagName=="IMG"){
alert(clickmessage);
return false;
}
}
}
else if (document.layers) {
if (e.which == 3) {
alert(clickmessage);
return false;
}
}
else if (document.getElementById){
if (e.which==3&&e.target.tagName=="IMG"){
alert(clickmessage)
return false
}
}
}
function associateimages(){
for(i=0;i<document.images.length;i++)
document.images[i].onmousedown=disableclick;
}
if (document.all)
document.onmousedown=disableclick
else if (document.getElementById)
document.onmouseup=disableclick
else if (document.layers)
associateimages()
</script>

Great,I really didn't want to put our company name across all our pics.I'd rather take the risk of someone stealing them than ruin the experience for potential customers viewing our site.Thanks

It still might be a good idea to watermark the pictures for anyone who is worried about someone stealing and using your pictures...There are ways around the right click disable feature...

View --> Page Source gives all of the code on the screen. All you need is rudimentary knowledge of HTML to find direct links to any images on your site and they can copy them or link directly (stealing YOUR bandwidth!!). Watermarking would be the best way to prevent them using your stuff.

Or, if you don't know all that stuff, do a print screen, then past the entire screen into an image file and crop out the image(s) you want. That's how I get our portrait pictures off the picturepeople.com website so I can put them in my screensaver.

We have found the watermarking to be quite frustrating since as Dustin says, it does seem to mess up the customer's view......so, I think the trick might be in your photography. When you take a photo, make certain you position yourself where your photo will allow something to be put on the picture. The other thing we have done is to make our website "see-through" on the picture.

Having someone use your pictures without permission or worse, without credit is just wrong.

If someone has malice in their heart, they are gonna get what they want. I will go to any five websites right now where people watermark and I will get the pictures back to not show the watermark. Just like you can have an alarm system, The Club and any other theft deterrant in your car, if a thief wants it, they are gonna get it. Like they say, locks only keep out honest people.

Celeste, excellent picture. I liked it so much I made it good as new. (Sorry C, just making a point) Even if you watermark straight acrossed the middle using Photoshop and a clone brush you can make it disappear. In the meantime, your picture looks like crap because when I see a watermark on a picture, that's all I see.

So, okay, now that we know folks can get around the "no right click" and someone can erase my watermark - who's got the proper plan?????

My plan is to estimate the number of hours I'd screw around messing with something like this, then multiply it by the dollar figure I think I am worth an hour, and see if I really care that much whether some leech takes a pic of mine or not. Either someone is going to snatch it and pretend it is their work, or a braver person might take it and say, "here is an example of CarolinaPW services....as you can see they've done this and this and this incorrectly, whereas with Fifewash, we do things like this."

The first thief, while annoying, doesn't affect you. The second, well, a decent customer would see through a tactic like that, and wouldn't be at all impressed. So aside from feeling slightly violated and annoyed, I don't see this as something worth spending valuable time on.

Another thing--don't put your website addy on sites/bbs's like this if you don't want snatched. Besides these bbs's, where else is someone going to locate most of our websites?? The only people that would probably ever see them are the local guys. Most of us aren't top-ranking search Co's. Double-edged sword----if you want publicity, prepare for "flattery". If you can live without publicity, then your site will just remain between you and your customers/potential customers for the most part, or really avid searchers.
