I too, decry the control that Microsoft has over me, but like many people, feel powerless against them. I'm aware of the alternative OS's (Linux) and browsers (Firefox) out there, but it seems that when I try them, I always run into trouble somewhere along the line. Of course, anyone who's tried IE7 will tell you what a POS it is as well.

Larry,

I hear you, but with Firefox, if you added the appropriate 'addons', I think you would love Firefox. I use FF 2.0 with the following addons: Adblock (blocks ads in web pages), ForecastFox (weather advisory), McAfee Siteadvisor, FasterFox (speeds up FF tremendously), and a couple others. As for Linux, if I could ever shake my PC Gaming habit, I'd use Linux and never look back. All the freebies + stability + security + hundreds of flavors of Linux = you can't wrong.

Beth told me about Firefox several months back and I LOVE IT!!!!! IE7 threw errors and in comparison is slow as a turtle.

Please forgive me, but this is just too sweet. Mind you, this is a MS oriented website located in the UK.

Even Tony Blair is backing away from President George Bush. So for Jeff and others of like mind, take note.

Personally, I think Windows Vista is to XP what Milennium was to Win 98...lots of hype and some cool new skins, but overall not worth the box it's shipped in.

Download the appropriate Google and Firefox tools, and you won't need MS for anything other than a basic operating system. Unfortunately, I use too many specialized applications that require MS, but XP is perfect for years to come.

Agreed. Operating systems will soon be passe'. With on-line, open source basic tools such as word processing and spreadsheets now available, and the inevitable more goodies to come, who will need a specific OS? Remote servers will rule the earth.

Vista is possibly MS's last triumphant grasp at a slowly dying, money making juggernaut.

Anthony,

Actually, Bill Gates is leaving his boots behind. Never said or insinuated that MS is on a downward spiral. Not sure how much PC operating systems add to the bottom line but MS has hundreds of other sources of revenue. Even though big and slow, MS has a ton of marketing, managerial, and technical talent and will reinvent themselves as technology changes.

Bill Gates should be commended and given the World Good Guy Award. Like some robber barons of yesteryear, for example the Carnegie's and Rockefeller's, he is giving much of his riches back to society. Just as important, he has brought Warren Buffet and his amazing wealth into the vision..

I think the guy has earned worldwide respect and admiration for the new path he is forging.
