Question Honey Baked Ham deli help? - Aug 10th, 07, 06:12 PM

Hello everyone, need help with the whole process of cleaning exhaust and hood vents. Most of my work has come from residential/commercial homes and flat work.I was contacted by a manager of a H.B.H. deli to clean there exhaust and hood vent as well as sanitizing the entire prep room.I did not have my camera but I do have measurements and details. The manager has been there for two yrs vent has never been cleaned in that time.Vent is 16in x 12in at about 8ft high with three filters. hood is 3ft x 7ft. The deli uses natural gas so were the hood and vent connect there are two tubed censors for fire saftey. The room is16ft x 12.5 ft also walls to be cleaned are 9ft tall made from hard plastic material. The floor is slate and concrete. The help that I need is what chemicals, prep time, tools, and priceing. My rig has hot water up to 180 degrees 3500 psi at 4.2 gpm.I Hope I have provided enough info with out pics to get detailed responses. If not you guys just let me know what other info is needed. Thanks CHRIS

Most important

Do you have insurance for hood and ducts?

I am not talking about powerwashing insurance, since they are different.

Is this your first hood, and if so you may want to tag along with another contractor who cleans exhaust systems, also with a suppression company so you know that they are not just sensors hanging, or attend a school.

You don't get a second chance in this business if you miss a spot like a house or deck.

There is alot of liability and accountability when dealing with Restaurant Kitchen Exhaust Systems and fire suppression.

Now before anyone gets all angry just sit back and think about what you are jumping into.

I see everyday what happens to restaurants that are not cleaned properly, or customers that have been given just a polish job

Dave O, When I went to purchase insurance I did not say it was for hood and ducts specific.Yes this would be my first hood. After getting this and more info about the hood cleaning side of pressure washing I may just direct the manager of H. B. H. to someone who does this in my area. But because I was contacted I thought I would question you guys that are in the hood cleaning biz. Also I take my pressure washing biz very seriously and if I don't have the knowledge and confidence to do this job THE RIGHT WAY FIRST.Then I will let it pass by.I always do any job that I take the right way first, because my name is attached to each job I do and I represent that in a professional manor .If you or anyone else would help to guide me with the steps I need to take.So that if this job does not work out then I can become properly trained in this area and I will be ready the next time. THANKS, CHRIS

If this is something you would like to do in the future and theres a call for it in your area. I would go for it. Pass this job on and like dave said go with another hood vent company, see if you'd like to do it, then get ALL the right training.

I never looked into it all, but there sure seems like there is a ton to it and you should have a good amount of on the job training..

Good luck to you if you venture into it

There is a great free kitchen exhaust cleaning manual at IKECA Kitchen Grease Exhaust Cleaning Manual

Everything you need to know about hood cleaning from bidding to cleanup is covered there.

You can learn alot on these boards,But as stated above there is nothing like on the job training.I am new to this business also and worked with another company last week for free to get some experience,we did a large university with nine hoods, some self cleaning types, wok cooking ,fryer, broiler this place had it all. The training has given me the confidence I needed to get rolling, and to hopefully prevent any costly errors. After actually doing the work I would never suggest hood cleaning without some sort of training.

Thanks for all the input. I would like to find someone in my area that does this kind of work? I have looked in the phone book but can not find anyone specializing in hood/vent cleaning. The manual is added prep, but I would like on the job training to see if this is something I would like to pursue. Thanks again for all the advice. CHRIS, P.S. HOW WOULD YOU GUYS FIND HOOD/VENT CLEANERS IN YOUR AREA?

You could ask some of your local restraunts who the cleaners are and that should get you hooked up with a cleaner.Someone local to you may not want to train you. You might have to travel some.
