It would be very beneficial to all if NaOH, or sodium hydroxide, was not referred to as "soap". Go wash your hands, or take a bath and shampoo with it. It ain't soap.

Hey Rick,
Tidbit: Did you know that before the soap we know today was created, lye was used as a soap to wash hands with? Lye aka sodium hydroxide was widely available but very harsh. People used to use it in varying strengths for various purposes till it was decided that it caused more harm than good and it was replaced with emollient and glycerin soaps which were much less effective but still helped to get a person clean without burning their skin. Now others may grasp the reality of why no one wanted to have their mouth washed out with it for cursing. HD-80 is hardly what we would consider soap nowadays but the term is in essence correct. What used to freak me out is finding it in tubes of toothpaste and mouthwash as an ingredient for pH balancing along with some food ingredients as well. Heck, drink a can of Coke and you are imbibing Phosphoric acid for that matter. The same stuff we use to clean masonry in industrial concentrations. Go figure. Russ, sorry for the hijack, just wanted to add a little trivia to your soap reference. I will add a bit of trivia. . .
People living along the Nile River thousands of years ago accidentally discovered "soap" when washing their clothes in the river. They found that when they washed their clothes in certain spots along the bank the clothing would get much more clean. Turns out these spots were all just down stream from where they would cremate their dead. As the bodies burned, their fat was rendered and dripped into the ground. As the lipids in their fat leeched their way through the soil to the river they would pass through naturally occurring lye in the soil. The combination of this fat and lye would create naturally "soapy" water for them to wash their clothes in. Back in the day, I suppose they credited the Gods for this. Today it is seen as just a bit of coincidental chemistry. Extreme Solutions, Inc. www.WoodrichBrand.com 636-288-8512 - Cell 2000 N. Broadway St. Louis, MO 63102 1-866-536-7393 |

Am I mistaken, or did you originally create a company listing for NorCal? Extreme Solutions, Inc. www.WoodrichBrand.com 636-288-8512 - Cell 2000 N. Broadway St. Louis, MO 63102 1-866-536-7393 |

But since you ask... I use either of the two handles/profiles during registering for various places/forums. Unsure which I used when registering back when you wanted feedback before going live but I thought I had decided to switch to or use Norcal*** on my listing within the contractor forum section. Since I had not been on for some time I did not recall my pass or know the exact wording of the profile and so am sure I created a new registration in order to create a thread listing. Like starting anew..know what I mean?Whether the title of the listing or the profile posting has been changed or consolidated by moderator to MMI**** I can not say for sure at this point. Maybe Celeste knows if she adjusted or not. Again, thought I was leaning all Norcal but who knows... I just know I wanted listing to match profile so... good luck in all that, take care. Perfect point there.
Common property of the two would be that of being slippery to the touch. Put a dab of either between yer thumb and finger to feel it. The straight hydroxide/lye can burn ya though... I am thinking you had created a listing for NorCal right after I asked you to register and check out the site. Either I am wrong or you don't remember it. Doesn't matter, soap is on it's way. Now here is something for you to think about. . . The reason caustics FEEL slick is because they are rendering the lipids or fats just below your skin and turning them into soap. ![]() Can't even feel yer finger prints when it happens. So yea, on it's own a caustic may not be slick. ( I don't fall when I strip a floor with no wax on it...hehe) Animal based soap though is slick regardless as it done already rendered fat from elsewhere and may have been balanced back down in ph or what have you to be skin friendly. (any info on that would be interesting Russell). Weird stuff!.. some the products ya can taste in yer mouth the moment ya touch it. Chems can go right on through you and into all yer organs. I am probably wasted and headed for an ugly toxic avenger death. Kevin,
I recommend you watch Dirty Jobs - Fat Bottom Farms episode. They make some of that fancy ladies soap from gaots milk. It's everything you ever need to know about saponification, and it features goats! Extreme Solutions, Inc. www.WoodrichBrand.com 636-288-8512 - Cell 2000 N.
