Deck Lights? - Jul 3rd, 08, 06:53 AM

I am considering carrying a line of deck lights for the site. I have always thought this could be a good option for contractors to offer the homeowners after restoring the deck. They most likely will be downlights for the posts/steps and low voltage. They could be sold as an accent effect and for safety. They would be easy to install.

Let me know what you think...

I know they are easy to work with, what brand are you looking at using?

I installed some about 5 years ago at my house and they are great. It really gives an elegant look.

Scott,

If the product is high quality and lasts for more than a few years. Might be a good add on.

Most I have seen do not seem to last more than a few years.

They will last for many years. Made out of metal and not plastic. I will be looking at a catalog from one of my vendors and I will post some pictures when I get them.

That is a good starting point. UV and weather kill plastic. Just look at composite decks!

Do you think licensing would be necessary to do that type of electrical work? Or is low voltage ok without electrician certificate or something

Charlie,

Low voltage, ie: 12 volt, does not need a permit or license in most locations. Beware though.

Years ago, went through walls, between floors, to run 36 separate coax, ethernet, and tele. cables throughout my home. No permit required.

5 yrs. ago, put up some 12 volt accent lighting in the kitchen. Building permit and inspection required. Go figure. Best to call the local building inspector dept.
