EZ-
Just did a fence that got tagged last Friday in Apple Valley. About 90' of gang graffiti in spray paint. Downstreamed stripper, let dwell, rinse, neutralize, pick up check. PM me if you need more advice on this.

What in the above is a "tagged" fence?

Tagged means graffiti. Some people do it just for whatever but it can also be gangs "tagging" their territory or attempting to make a statement against a rival gang

Charlie,

Thanks. Guess I'll stay right here in Central NJ. Either I am blind or we don't have that problem locally here. Kind of scary, especially in a pristine state like Minn.

Rick,
Yes it's getting worse in the last two or three years. I have some extensive knowledge of gang graffiti, as my father was a Mpls cop, and head of the forces gang unit for several years. The Crips, Bloods, Disciples, and now Mexican and Hmong gangs, all have a foothold in the area. I've actually had police protection while removing graffiti in bad parts of town. Not for the weak of heart.

Jayson, BigChaz is right on the mark. Strip, rinse, brighten - the entire fence, not just the tag.

Mike,

That is very disheartening. I was last in the Minneapolis - St. Paul region about 32 yrs. ago and aside from the odor around the stockyards, remember the cities as a very nice place to live.

Sorry to hear the gang plague has reached your area of the country. I thought it was only pervasive in the big Northeast and West Coast cities. Some U.S. urban areas are devolving into 3rd world ghettos.

The state of Minn. is very pretty, especially up north with all the woods and lakes. You do have some hot summers and very cold winters!

I would look up a product called Shadow Max at elephantsnot.com. works good on raw wood. I used both methods- spots and overall spray. either depends on weathering or stains.

the outfit has national sales out of Minneapolis

I cannot believe the dude in NJ never saw graffiti- that's where the tagging style started as a Vietnam War protest.

Contrary to a lot of places, gang graffiti comprises about 10-25% of all the graffiti, and the rest, mostly tagging (artistic strokes and fonts, with mural like features) comprises the majority. though relegated to the realm of minority residents, most of that type include white and other males over 18, many with jobs, education, college degrees or scholarships, and so on. The style there incorporates 7-8 skill levels, and ends in mural type graffiti. sort of a point game like volleyball, only with a spray can and personal risk
