Want some work? Gotta travel a little. - Jul 27th, 08, 05:12 PM

Anyone ever been to Rome, Italy? We are in Europe every year or so, my wife goes back home (Bulgaria) at least once a year. I had to make a stop in Rome once and did a little of the tourist stuff. You can’t believe all the graffiti plastered over everything. All the beautiful statues and such are just covered in spray paint. Not just that but trash everywhere. One evening while sitting on my hotel balcony I watched a “lady” on the sidewalk stop, squat, and take a wizz right on the sidewalk. Nobody gave it a second glance, just stepped around the growing puddle. I’m sure many parts of Italy are nice but Rome is not one of them.

What a shame. Many years ago, when I was 13 years old I spent 6 weeks in Italy, traveling and staying with family. Rome was beautiful, not at all the way you just described it to be.

Beth,

You are of Italian origin? Hah, no wonder I love 'ya! Best women in the world, married one.

Europeans have a different perspective. How many of you have taken a pee on the streets of NYC or San Fran.? At least they don't hide it. Geeze, dogs do it in every city on earth, numerous times, every day. The French have their pups eating at the table in 4 star restaurants.

Don't know but my wife is in Italy for 2 weeks this October. If it is a bad as Rick2 describes, I know I'll be the first one to hear about it.

Stay home.

Two weeks in October? Lucky man. My wife leaves for Bulgaria is September for one week with the baby. Party time. I wish it was for two weeks but she says I can’t be left unattended for that long of time.

I lived in Japan for several years and that country can be pretty dirty too. Someone (man or woman) taking a wiz on the sidewalk was nothing unusual there either. My tiny apartment was in an ally above a bar and every morning the smell of vomit prevailed, that is until they could wash off the ally sidewalk. The owner of the bar would always leave out a water hose for me because several times my motorcycle was the target of his customer’s puke.

My wife’s country, Bulgaria, is kept very clean. She says it was even better when it was under Russian – Communist rule 12 years ago. Giant pressure washing trucks would come down the streets late at night and clean the streets and sidewalks. Those days are gone but at least you don’t have to stand in line 5 hours for a loaf of bread or wait 6 months for a pair of shoes that don’t fit.

I actually wish I was going with her next month to Bulgaria but I can’t take the time off work right now. I’ve been there 6 or 7 times but just can’t get enough of that country; it’s a lot of fun. In fact that’s how I met her – traveling around Eastern Europe 9 years ago.

Me? Nope. I'm not Italian. My mothers second husband was a first generation Italian, born and raised in Rome with family all over the boot, so we visited and stayed with people at their villas. Trip of my life.

If you want to know if it really is that bad, find a travel forum (they are out there) and ask those who have been there recently.

Rick,

No you are the lucky one! I get stuck with taking care of two dogs!

Am seriously considering going to Egypt after wood season is over and want to spend 3 or 4 days in Cairo. Now that should be one, "interesting" city.

I've only got one dog but with his energy (a Jack Russell Terrier) it's like taking care of three dogs.

Egypt? That should be a fun trip. My friend Hamdi is from Egypt. Hamdi has been in the USA for 20 years or so. He says he's never been back nor does he have any desire to return. Guess it's a nice place to visit but...

My wife and I have talked about going to India for a few weeks. That sounds like it might be fun. She wants to go to Japan and Hong Kong but I could pass on that. I lived in Japan for over 2 years and visited Hong Kong and Korea more times than I remember. Actually Hong Kong is a lot of fun. I wouldn't mind going back. I hope it hasn't changed much now that it has been returned to China.

Rick,

Jack Russell's are a terror. Although we have a 15 month old female English Springer Spaniel that might give him a run for the money! There is a reason they call them Springers!

Wrote software for racetracks for a number of years and Jack Russell's were on the backside of every track I ever visited, from Florida, to Kentucky, to California. They seem to have some affinity with horses, but then again so do goats!

Not sure that Egypt is a "nice" place to visit, but it is just at the top of my list since I've been about 10 yrs. old. Just have to go there. Once. I do not want to die without at least seeing the great pyramids and floating down the Nile to Luxor.

Our Jack Russell, Cody, is really nuts. We got him from one of my sister –in-law’s clients. The lady told us she tried to get rid of the dog twice by throwing it out of the car on a highway exit ramp but the dog returned home both times. She told us this as if she was talking about the weather. I guess she didn’t see anything wrong with throwing a dog out of a car. It took Cody about a year before he would stop shaking and puking if I had to put him in my car. I guess he thought I was going to throw him out the window too. Now he loves the car rides, boat and jet ski too.

Rick,

This "lady" should be shot at close range in both kneecaps and tied up for carrion to pick at her sorry bones. Slowly. What a cruel ****.
