Soda Blasting - Apr 5th, 03, 06:15 PM

Who here uses Soda? I have the equipment and soda, but do not get many calls for it as of yet. More playing with it on my own stuff.

I pay $25.00 for a 50lb pound from USF Surface Preparation. Does anyone get a better price, and if so where?

I think Jon uses soda, or did. But I don't think he does Graffiti. Jon? You reading this?

soda blasting - Apr 8th, 03, 10:17 AM

Dave olsen is the current guru of soda blasting.
He has a WADU built here in NJ
he uses it for rust removal, and graffitti removal.
It has a lot of uses if you can make or find a market for it.
Getting contract's from local government,school's,painter's,
boat yards[removing bottom paint] ect...
a long time ago Beth started a thread on another site to have people list all the uses for one.
Soda comes in diffrent grit's and is very envriomently friendly.
Restoration type work is prob. the #1 reason to use one.
I would love to find a way to market a service to use in in a shop setting for winter work.
OTP how aggressive can you make it?
If i wanted to strip 5 coats of brushed on ind. paint from truck bodies to get them ready to apply new paint, would i be able to compete against a reg sandblaster?
I really wish their was a place in my state to go and try stuff out.
I am going to start looking into a shop to sell everything for this buissness, includeing chems, part's, service,showroom,ect...
add classroom and hands on trainning.
repair hose's,mobile mechanic,ect.....
i wish i had more money to get something off the ground.

Ron,
I can not compare it to sand, as I have not used any. As far as the industrial paint, I have not done that either.
I can say that it can be some very abrasive stuff, as I etched some concrete when I first tried it. I have a trash pump with the metal frame around it like a generator, that I need to try it on. The paint is pretty stubborn, and does not come off with regular strippers. I will try and get some pics.

the frame of your trash pump is prob not paint but powder coat.
Tell me how it turns out.
powder coating is great stuff untill you want to remove it.
it will be a good test.

Ron,
Your right it is powder coat and some very tough stuff. Soda would not even touch it, so I tried the turbo, but that also did nothing. I guess I will try some sand and see how that goes.

Beth Ron is right, Dave is King when it comes to soda, David uses it for cleaning hoods too but I sold my system.

never really pushed it for grafitti as to many gangs and did not want trouble with them.

ON MY BIKE PARTS - Apr 13th, 03, 09:14 AM

i get them powder coated "chrome".
no rust,no pit's,and check this out.
Just to show the quailty of the powder coat, my guy powder coat's a small piece of electrical condiut tubeing.
Then he lay's it on his anvil and gives you a dead blow hammer.
You can smash it flat and the powder coat stay's on. And still look's good even if the metal dos'nt.
End of this season im pulling my metal fuel tank off my wash unit and powder coating it.
For some awsome paint for stuff you need to paint[like when you do get the powder coat off-if you get it off]

Just remember that powder coat is not all created equal. As with all painting, it takes some quality prep time and a lot of places do not do it.

Hello Folks,

Baking Soda is just another wrench in the old toolbox!

We have used it inside large stainless tanks in industrial plants, graffiti/stain removal and some building cleaning.

We have a lot of wrenches in our toolboxs that we do not use very often, but just like a mechanic working on a truck, every once in awhile you need that special tool!

We have not used our Soda Blaster for about a year now! Nope it's not for sale, may find a job tomorrow that we will need it for!

I will post a couple pictures (before and after) of a test we did on a building last year.

I have a YP ad coming out and listed myself in the Soda Blasting section, as well as Steam Cleaning and Water Pressure Cleaning.
It was a good deal, with good exposure, Hope it works.

Two types of Soda Blasting-dry and wet.

Dry Soda Blasting is the best product to remove Powder Coating and car paint and anything that has a hard surface.

The system with compressor is around $15,000. I run my system off a LeRoy 130 CFM. To remove Powder Coating you need min 185 CFM. These system do one hell of a job.

The wet system is a far reach as compared to the dry-two worlds. I can strip a car in less than two hours. But if the car has bondo add several hours.

David
