Engine and transmission washing - Oct 20th, 06, 12:08 PM

Hello all,
I have been approached on washing engines and transmisions at a used auto parts reseller (wrecking yard). All engines and transmissions are out of the vehicles and sitting on the floor of a warehouse. There is about a hundred of each at initial clean and the owner would want what engines and trannies accumilate after that done every month. They have a rotation of around 20 cars a month which means twenty engines and twenty trannies will need cleaned. Im just hoping someone out there has pursued this or is doing this service. I cant even begin to imagine on what to charge. I know reclaiming will be an issue and how I would go about it. I hope it is lucrative and maybe found a niche in this service that might have been overlooked by most PWers.

Know that you should use steam i think the presure of a pw may crack the block if done inproperly. also all holes that would have an electrical piece or where a hose my go needs to be plugged and if no other parts on engine such as starter and sensors, you should have no problem if just the block. this alpplies to trans also. I'd ask if i can do a few JUNK engines and tranies to see how it's gonna work. if they can ask if they can put engines on a stand so you can rotate them. I'd say price wise ask your hourly rate.

The engines are stripped bare maybe a few sensors here and there but mainly heads and block. I don't think that they are looking for perfect clean but I will price three ways, sprayed down to get major stuff off, degreased majority, and spotless. After I posted this thread I started thinking more in to it and the initial cleaning might be worth it but im not so sure of the monthly 40 pc wash. Unless I can bid it high enough it might not be worth it. Ill have to do a test and see how long it takes to wash each and price accordingly. Thanks.
