I can see the HAZMAT, but how do you get by with no inspections with a class A vehicle and trailer? We have to do that every year on our class B vehicles.

Blaine, are you referring to the class "A" and class "B" commercial driver's licenses?
If so, neither is required until you operate a vehicle gross rated at 26001 pounds or more, "B" for straight trucks, "A" for combination vehicles (tractor/semi-trailer, truck/trailer, or other truck/trailer combinations classed by weight or permitted routing/special services) In any event, the renewal period, and requirements are based mostly on past experience. I've had a CDL since they were required in 1989, and was waived on the original testing because of my experience driving commercial vehicles before the advent of the CDL. Since then, the rules for renewal have relaxed, originally you were meant to renew every six years with the full written, static (walk-around) and practical driving test. The intent was that every six years, CDL holders would have to spend a full business day retesting for their license and all endorsements. Currently, the renewal is automatic upon fee payment, if the license holder has no moving violations in the past license period. The Hazmat endorsement is an exception, I believe, and must be retested (written or computerized) every three years. I may be wrong on that, my hazmat endorsement is the only endorsement I no longer carry on my CDL. I have been intending to rectify that (just because) so I'll do the research in the near-term, and get back to this thread then. The short answer, as Kory says, is that his rig requires no CDL, and tht he has no hazmat permit or license endorsement. The laws for commercial licensure are supposed to be uniform across the nation, but as with carrier enforcement regulations, the manual is so complicated that few officers even claim to be proficient in all aspects of the manual. Add to that the changeable nature of current enforcement trends, and the odd loopholes that exist, and you get a regulatory stew that is out of control, and designed to favor large trucking outfits, that can afford retained lawyers, over the small owner-operators and fleet operators. Here is one ridiculous example: If you hold a class "B" CDL, you are licensed to drive a straight truck rated at over 26000 pounds gross vehicle weight. If you have a truck equipped with airbrakes at that rating, you must add an air-brake endorsement to your CDL. No biggie, right? Alright, let's say you buy a straight truck rated for under 26000 pounds. The next step down is to 25999 pounds GVWR, and many of these commercial vehicles are also equipped with airbrakes. Do you need a CDL or an airbrakes endorsemnt to drive this rig? NO. Any schmoe off the streets, with no training, instruction, test, or even physical or mental evaluation can drive that truck anywhere he pleases in the US. The difference in any dimensions between the two trucks? One pound of GVWR. Why even have a class "B" CDL or an endorsement for airbrakes? Apparently just to collect the fees. Carrier enforcement is rapidly just becoming a bunch of tax clerks with nightsticks, collecting fines to balance lazily written state budgets at the expense of drivers and small operators.
