Stripping Cedar Garage Doors - Dec 9th, 06, 08:31 PM

Here are some cedar garage doors that had some type of crappy marine varnish stain that didn't last longer than 6 months applied by the builder's painter. The painter used some type of chem stripper and scraped the doors. He told me they stripped the doors but there was no way i could stain them without stripping again.I used F/18 and brightened w/oxalic.

I'm gonna stain them Mon if it doesn't rain.

Shane,
How do you deal with surrounding areas with the f-18 and the oxalic? Do you plastic and tape it all off?

Nope didn't mask anything off i was a little worried but I pre-wet everything and rinsed after i sprayed chems.I was planning worst comes to worst have to paint the trim around the garage but my mix was weak.

Shane,

You often write that you use 100% flake for stripping. Why did you use F18 here?

What effect does the stripper have on the hardware? I've cleaned hardware with a spritzer of paint thinner. What do you do?

Did you do any prep like sanding?

I would be inclined to roll and back-brush stain in this app. What did you do?

What did you do to protect the concrete?

What effect does the stripper have on the hardware? I've cleaned hardware with a spritzer of paint thinner. What do you do? The hardware was all iron and it cross my mind to tape em off but I didn't.I didn't have any problems at all with the stripper or the Oxalic.

Did you do any prep like sanding? No sanding was needed and i don't usually sand rough cedar cause the stain won't stick that good after sanding.

I would be inclined to roll and back-brush stain in this app. What did you do? I brushed in the trim around the edges and the stain wipes off the painted trim.I also brushed around the edges of all the 1x4 to make it easier when i paint padded the rest of the door. YOU WOULD NOT want to roll this type of job cause you would be slinging stain everywhere you don't want it!

What did you do to protect the concrete? I put some bed sheets down in front of the door then I slid some 4'x4' pieces of cardboard under the door. Now you can also just wet the concrete down and lay some plastic by the door.
It took me 2 hours to stain the 3 doors by myself with a break here and there.

....Out of curiousity, those doors don't look very functional. I mean, do they have some kind of actuator that opens them automatically or something?? Just wondering.....they are beautiful doors, but it would be a pain to have to get out and open them, etc...plus they'd blow shut, etc. I'm surely wrong. Nice job though Shane!
