Question Level 4 Drought in Metro Atlanta Area - Oct 11th, 07, 09:00 PM

This Drought in Georgia is serious. Being a new full time PWer here in Georgia with this water situation I'm trying not to pannick. How are others in this area dealing with it. I know that being a licensed professional contractor, I am extempt from the restrictions. But with the Media and frantic HOs policing water it is very difficult to keep doing business. Yesterday I actually had to educate the mail delivery lady, that I was actually allowed to continue PWing.

Willie do what I did here in southwest Ga.Call the local news channels and ask them to run a story on the businesses that are allowed to operate during drought conditions.
Our local NBC channel also included a write up on their website outlining what types of business can and can not work during a drought along with a link to the state guidelines.I have both of these printed and ready to show potential customers.

My brother contacted the small town that we have a large (Spring 07 WTW) redo in. They have water restrictions in place and told him that he absolutely could not use the water for what we need to do. Could it be that the person on the other line didn't know what she was talking about? Or is it different for every area. I sure would like to get this monkey off my back!

At the moment no areas to my knowledge has restricted licensed contractors from accepting pressure washing jobs. However, the facts are starting to speak for for themselves. The Atlanta Mayor is calling special press conferences and recommending all soughts of interior home water restrictions. I have a PWing job scheduled for tomorrow morning in Cobb County. Although the Homeowner called me he is very concerned about getting a backlashing from his neighbors.

If anyone has a good RAIN DANCE, please bring it on.

Alternative income sources in a drought:

gutter cleaning
window washing
painting (interior or exterior)
remodeling work
VCT flooring
maybe awning cleaning

How about handyman repairs
garage or closet organizing
landscaping ( at least fall yard clean up)
Christmas light set up and take down
garage floor resurfacing - put down coating

Maybe some of these can help if you have not thought to try them.

Thanks,

All of these are excellent ideas that I had not considered. I've had several customers that asked about gutters and windows. Maybe it time for me to expand my horizons.

It CAN be different for every area. The Level 4 water restrictions imposed by the EPD are the minimum the northern 3rd of the state must comply with. Local governments are free to impose tougher restrictions and there are some that have.

It depends on the area. Most of the info you need to find is on the web or a phone call away. Here are some examples:

Athens Clarke County:
Athens-Clarke County Outdoor Watering Schedule (Year Round)

Here is news from Jackson County:
Water restrictions tighten
Tuesday showers welcome, but not nearly enough
With the regional reservoir projected to run out of water by the end of the year, the Jackson County Water and Sewerage Authority intends to toughen water restrictions for its 6,600 customers on Thursday.
The authority plans to eliminate every exception to the ban on outdoor watering. It meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in the office of the Jackson County Area Chamber of Commerce.
Like the rest of the state, Jackson County is at level four in its drought contingency plan — in fact, it was at level four before the Environmental Protection Division put the northern half of the state on its strictest water restrictions. But, declaring a “water emergency,” the authority will further restrict the use of water.

Barrow County:
Watering Restrictions

I was able to get a permit last week in Barrow County to wash a house. They told me that if they didn't get rain this week then no further permits would be issued after Friday 10/12.

Gwinnett County:
http://www.gwinnettcounty.com/depart...ght_level4.pdf

Business use is still allowed without specials permits in Gwinnett county.

Here is a link showing which counties are under level 4 restrictions. Read down to FAQ #4 and you will see that power washers are exempt at this time. http://conservewatergeorgia.net/pdf/faq.pdf

Power Washers are exempt only if the local counties have not imposed stronger restrictions like in some of the examples I have posted above.

You're right Mike. Unfortunately some county websites are not kept current and the only way to know if they have imposed tighter controls is to call. This is an example of where a national PW org could be tracking things for members and keeping them aware of restrictions in the area.

Doug - I agree ~ not only to keep track of restrictions but also to be an advocate of easing the restriction and/or lifting them!
