Secular Group to Protest Georgia Governor's Drought Prayer Service

ATLANTA — A secular group said Friday it would protest Gov. Sonny Perdue's planned prayer service intended to ask for relief from the Southeastern drought, saying the rally violates the principle of separation of church and state.
Perdue's office announced Wednesday that it had sent out invitations to leaders from several faiths for the service, set for Tuesday outside the state Capitol.
"The problem is not that they are praying for rain, it's they are doing it in our name," said Ed Buckner of the Atlanta Freethought Society, which seeks to educate the public about the separation of church and state. "We didn't elect that guy as a preacher. He has no right to make a religious statement on behalf of Georgians."
A Baptist, Perdue has several times mentioned the need for prayer — along with water conservation — as the state's drought crisis has worsened. Over the summer, he participated in day of prayer for agriculture at a gathering of the Georgia Farm Bureau in Macon, Ga.
The Southeast has been suffering from an intense drought in recent months that has threatened supplies of drinking water.

The man, even though he's the Governor, still has his right to be a Christian and pray to God if he so chooses. Seems to me there's way too much jumping to "the cause" these days. Bunch of whiners with nothing better to do, I say.

I don't think politicians should meddle with religion, it's a slippery slope. Many people in this country think the republican party is the 'moral' choice. Politicians should stick to politics - and prayers should be done in church. You go too far in one direction and you end up with countries like the middle east where the religion is the state.

Can't the drought just be the drought? If people want to pray for relief they should pray for relief. Prayer is a personal thing. I never post about that kind of issue, but this just got to me. So, I did.

I will pray about anything I want to pray about anytime, anywhere, and I have a right to pray for rain, or pray for other people, or pray simply to talk to God. Whether I pray out loud, or in my heart, I will pray. No one can stop me, or impose their beliefs, or political agenda on me about praying.

When the chips are down or the chips are up, I will pray. The most powerful thing I can do is pray. Shut my mouth and pray, open my mouth and pray, on my knees, behind the wheel, behind the wand or surface cleaner.

This freedom we have is supposed to be based on a Godly structure.

You ( no one in particular ) don't have to pray, but you can't tell me I can't.
You don't even have to know that I am or just did pray, you can't stop me.
I will pray whether you like it or not about anything that is on my heart to pray for, My Kid, job, pet bird, family, RAIN, for a Gibson Black Beauty guitar, or end of draught in Ga. It's my right. Even if my tongue were removed, you can't stop me. Pray before..... get direction...... pray during..... get help..... pray after....... gives thanks.

Another example of the PC crap that is ruining this nation. No one is being forced to pray. Storm troopers aren't going to round up the non participants and send them to the gulags. Just beacuse Sonny is the govenor doesn't mean he can't pray. If you don't want to participate then don't but let the others who do pray in peace.
