Saw guy fall from roof today!! - May 23rd, 08, 11:16 PM

Roof cleaning is a big thing to a lot of you guys and it pays well.
I know most of you work from a ladder or ground, but occasionally you might have to walk the roof with out any harness or ropes to keep you safe.
After what I saw today I think I am going to stay on ground while washing.
My neighbors was replacing his roof and had a crew working 2 stories high, ambulance and fire truck came by as I was leaving this morning and I followed them and the guy fell from 2 stories and was still on ground when I got there.
As of yet I don't know how he is, but I pray he will survive and recover.
These guys walks roofs all day long everyday, most pressure washers don't have the experience that these guys have on roofs and there is a great risk if you are not harness in.
For you hunters out there it is similar to using a harness while hunting up in a tree stand, we feel we are confidant climbing until you make a simple mistake and come down faster than you went up.
BECAREFUL GUYS AND BE SAFE!!!!

I was seriously thinking about doing roof washing - but I remember paying for a roofing liability policy when I was doing some roofs. It seems to me, that in this day in age, an insurance agency will only insure you to clean roofs if you get a roofers liability policy - are any of you guys actually doing that? That's a good chunk of change, you have to clean alot of roofs before you start making a profit.

After we sold Mallard they got loose on safety and a guy fell off an apartment complex roof. He broke his back and both leggs below the knee. he lost one leg to gang green.

Safety is very important.

I'm surprised that the health and safety rules in the US allow so much walking on roofs and ladder work.
Things in the UK and Ireland have become quite restrictive of late. Ladder use is practically banned, unless its for "access only" and walking on roofs can be done only with a full harness and helmet.

The good side of this is that fatalities from falls in the cleaning industry have gone down, and some of the cowboy cleaners have moved on to other things. For the professional cleaners trying to earn a living it has meant huge changes to work practice and pricing structure.

At the end of the day, if it saves lives then it can't be a bad thing!
