Price - Dec 1st, 05, 06:14 PM

After talking with another contractor today I became very curious about pricing. I've been specializing in wood restoration for over a decade. The price varies by region of the country and also from company to company within each market.

I am very interested to see how the prices here in the St. Louis market stack up with those nationwide.

Russell,

I live over in the past Eureka and I have read that the normal price around here was $1.35 a sq ft. but have been unable to get that.

Im lucky to get $1/sf here. there are too many painters willing to do it for $.45/sf The only people willing to pay that are transplants from up north. Guess there used to higher prices

I charge $1 to $1.25 a sq ft and only get maybe 20% of my estimates, I dont even try to get wood jobs really any more, people are just to cheap and just dont seem to care, even after I explain what I can do , show pics etc. I gave up. These decks are horrible sometimes and they say oh I dont want to spend that much, I tell them they will when they have to replace it when it rots. But they 'll hire a guy to blast the crap out of thier decks for $50 or $100, they can have it

I get 1.50 for wash and seal and 2.00 for a strip and seal. That is measuring all the wood, railing, spindles, steps, everything not just the floor. Mind you I've only done 5 decks out of 7 estimates so far.

90% of most wood we see is cedar

new construction = .90 sqft

restore = $1.10 - $2.15

Jeff,
we get a lot of those people to your talking about too (Here in Dallas,TX). All people care about nowdays is price. I've done the same as you, explain, show pictures, educate, it all seems to go in one ear and out the other.
Then I drive back by a week or two later and see exactly what your talking about, some fly by night contractor did it for like a 1/3 of what I was going to charge only to ruin what could have been a great deck or fence.
I wanna go back and say..told you so. But that wouldnt be professional. I tell myself, hopefully thats their "learning experince" and next time they'll understand......but probably not.

The question is a bit ambiguous as measuring techniques vary. If you are talking just floor measurements and there are no add-ons like benches or trellisses we get about $2.35 per sf in the Philly region.

I didn't know you knew the area that well, I am in Plymouth about 20 minutes south of South Bend on US 31.

I am still working on what to charge for decks. If you charge $2.00 sf does that include the stain or is that just labor?

I don't mean to be ambiguous. I am just looking for an average price per foot. Lets say patio style deck, no rails, no steps, no wasps and it is built over stain colored sand.

Also, thank you $2.35 sounds like exactly what I was after. I appreciate everyone who took the time to vote.

with the year around warm weather we have here in Texas, everyone and their monkey does "wood restoration". There are about 15 different companies I can think of right now that do what I do (wood restoration only) here in the Dallas area....So its competitive and at times pretty cut-throat.

....Hince the low price

Sunny and 68 today.....

Barry, I know where plymouth is. Maybe when I relocate we can get a beer if you drive to South Bend. Ha Ha. Keep up the good work.
